  • Sweet, sweet music was heard in Mount Vernon on Saturday, March 10, at Casey Middle School, when 34 Flora Schools students from Lincoln School and Floyd Henson Junior High School competed in the Illinois Grade School Music Association Solo and Ensemble Contest.
    The schools had four vocal solos, 29 instrumental solos, and one saxophone duet.
    Flora students received 10 first superior rankings, 22 firsts and one second.
    Any student who competed with a level C or higher received a first or first superior ranking.
    These students will also be eligible to compete in the state contest on Saturday, May 5, in Mount Carmel.
    The schools thanks the parents for their assistance and support.
    Also thanked were the students’ accompanists Steve Miller, Amy Beppler, Vicki McKnight, Delores Booker and Darla Gindlesberger.
