Clay County give yourselves a round of applause and a pat on the back!
I, Derrian Lewis, a rising North Clay Senior and daughter of Darrell Lewis and Josh and Lori Phillips; and granddaughter of Gary and Judy Connerly, won Kaplan's "Stanley's Story, Your Story" Scholarship worth $3,000.
Each applicant submitted a story about a person who has inspired them. I wrote about a paralyzed orthopedic surgeon from St. Louis, who practices from his wheelchair.
3,000 stories were submitted and mine was picked as a top five finalist and posted on Kaplan's Facebook page for voting. After a week-and-a-half of voting, my story won with 693 votes – 129 votes over second place!
Thank you so much Clay County, for giving me this honor. I would never have achieved this without your help. I would also like to thank the Advocate-Press, the Clay County Republican, the Hometown Journal, and WNOI for getting the word out about the contest. And a big thank you goes out to everyone who voted, whether you're from Clay County or not!
I can now use this scholarship to further my education and pursue a career as a doctor. Clay County, you always know how to come together and help one of your own. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
