  • Flora - The Flora Wolfgals were defeated in their home opener in a non-conference game by the Mt. Carmel Lady Aces at Conley Gym Monday, December 2nd by the score of Flora 49 Mt. Carmel 60.
Although the score shows a defeat, the Wolgals came into the game with fire and intensity right from the start of the game to the final sound of the horn at the end.
The Mt. Carmel Lady Aces are blessed with Tyra Buss, First Team IBCA (Illinois Basketball Coaches Association) First Team All-State for the third straight year and just recently signed her National Letter of intent to play Women's Basketball at Indiana University.
With that said, that did not intimidate the Wolfgals in the least. They continued to apply pressure defense both man to man and full court pressure making it difficult for the Lady Aces to have a good shot selection. For a while during the first quarter the score was point for point, then the Lady Aces pulled slightly away from the Wolfgals and as time ran out in the first quarter the score was Flora 11 Mt. Carmel 19.
In the second quarter the Wolfgals continued with that same fire and intensity throughout the quarter as the start of the game. Flora called a timeout with 3:12 left in the first half to regroup with the score Flora 22 Mt. Carmel 28. The Wolfgals came out of the timeout and battled back to tie the score at 28 - 28. With just a few seconds left in the half, Lady Aces Tyra Buss got free and hit a three pointer to put the Lady Aces in the lead as time ran out with the score Flora 28 Mt. Carmel 31 at the break.
The play for the Wolfgals started in the second half the same with good pressure defense and making that extra pass to find the open man. With 6:22 left in the third quarter the Mt. Carmel coach called a timeout, but not before Wolfgals Brooke Bayle hit two three pointers putting the Wolfgals up by the score of Flora 34 Mt. Carmel 31. The Wolfgals kept the lead until again just a few seconds left in the quater, then the Lady Aces re-established the lead as time ran out with the score Flora 42 Mt. Carmel 43.
In the fourth and final quarter the Wolfgals were bitten by two bugs if you will, the foul and turnovers bug. The fouls were due the good pressure on Tyra Buss by Wolfgals Brooke Bayles, Crimson Jones and Macy Warren. Wolfgals Kylie Cox stood her ground in the paint making it difficult for the Lady Aces to drive the ball up the middle. Flora had called two timeouts, the last one with 4:15 left in regulation play with the score Flora 44 Mt. Carmel 55. The Wolfgals continued to battle but the clock was winding down. Time ran out with the Wolfgals suffering defeat by the score of Flora 49 Mt. Carmel 60.
Page 2 of 2 - Head Coach McNeely's comments, "I was pleased with our overall effort tonight! We finally played with some passion. Several of the girls stepped up their level of play and contributed. Defensively we really made Tyra work hard but she is an incredible athlete that possess's a great basketball skill set. The girls made some nice defensive adjustments as the game progressed. We did a very good job on the defensive boards in limiting their posessions. Offensively we did some nice things. I liked our resillency when we fell behind by 9 in the first half & fought back to tie the game. We missed some opportunities early with some point blank misses but we responded well. Brooks Bayles hit some huge shots for us and played some solid defense on Buss. Crimson also had a great all around game tonight. She made several impact plays at both ends of the floor. Overall a great team effort to build upon. The only real disappointing part of the game was that we made some careless turnovers that cost us points at both ends! However, there were far more positives tonight that we can build on! I have no doubts that the best is yet to come for the Wolfgals!"
