Morning Jolt: Family saves kitten tossed out of car

A Michigan couple were driving on the freeway in Dearborn, Mich., when they saw a kitten tossed from a speeding car. Ronald Haas and Niel Rishoi quickly stopped and picked up the kitten, who surprisingly was OK other than being “scared and panicked.” The couple then adopted her and named her Dora.

Xenia Fire Department Board honors Edward “Butch” Akes, drags feet on minutes

Edward “Butch” Akes joined the Xenia Volunteer Department in 1964.  At the Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees on Wednesday May 2, 2012 he submitted his resignation/retirement after 48 years of service.

The attending firemen and the audience gave him a standing ovation and many warm wishes were extended.

Not only had Butch served faithfully, honorably and bravely to protect the residents of the Xenia Fire Protection Service District, he had also taken it upon himself to maintain the housekeeping of the Fire House after each rental event. In this way the rent paid by the renters could go directly to the Volunteer Firemen with no deduction for custodian service.

Morning Jolt: Bit by snake at Wal-Mart?

A man says he was bitten by a rattlesnake at a Wal-Mart in eastern Washington state. The man was in the outdoor gardening area and said he bent down to pick up a stick, but it turned out to be a rattlesnake. The snake wasn’t happy about being picked up and so bit the man, who was rushed to a hospital. The man survived but might have permanent damage to his hand.

'Onward and upward ... and oh, so close ...'

Moving 'onward and upward' to the IHSA Class 1A State Track and Field Finals after winning both the long jump and 100 meter dash on Friday at the Newton Girls' Sectional is Jennie Block of Flora High School.

And 'oh, so close' was several third places turned in by the Wolfgals at a Sectional meet where the winner and runner-up receive State Finals bids.

Easily winning the long jump, Block cleared 16-feet-1-inch, more than one full-foot better than the runner-up finisher, Lexie Davidson, of Newton.

Morning Jolt: Man wins Powerball 6 times

A man who wishes to remain anonymous won a $1 million Powerball prize six times. He purchased six tickets using the same number and won the second prize of $1 million each time.

County Board deals with Xenia Fire Department woes

The monthly Clay County Board meeting was held Tuesday May 8, at 6pm.  

The Mayor of Xenia, and the volunteer fireman for the village addressed the Board.  This was followed by office and committee reports, approval of motions, and adjournment.

Firemen’s Grievances

The court room where the meeting was held was full with members of the community of Xenia there in support of their fire department.

Rauch and Gill crowned King and Queen in Clay City

Clay City High School held its junior-senior prom on May 5 at the Holiday in Olney, IL.  

Clinton Rauch and Baylee Gill were crowned king and queen.

National Hospital Week puts spotlight on people in Clay County

A hospital is more than a place where people go to heal, it is a part of the community that fosters health and represents hope. From providing treatment and comfort to the sick, to welcoming new life into the world, hospitals are central to a healthy and optimistic community. That’s the message organizers are touting with the 2012 National Hospital Week theme “Making Miracles Happen.”

The event theme, announced this week, is the centerpiece of a promotional campaign aimed at uniting health care facilities across the country during the May 6–12 celebration. “National Hospital Week, first and foremost, is a celebration of people,” Bob Sellers, President of Clay County Hospital, said. “We’re extremely proud of each member of our staff and we recognize the important role they play in extending a sense of trust to our patients and our communities.”

Ludwig and Leib are Flora High School Prom royalty

Flora High School’s 2012 Prom was held on the steamy evening of Saturday, May 5, at FHS’ Conley Gymnasium.

Following the traditional promenade and introduction of students and their dates in front of the school, the coronation was held, allowing families and guests to move straight into the gym rather than having to return to the school later in the evening.

After the introduction of the Prom Court, the King and Queen were announced, with Andrew Ludwig and Helen Leib, respectively, being crowned.

Flora High School honors seniors, Seniors honor Rinehart

The morning of May 9, Flora High School held their Senior Awards Day, paying off all the months and years of hard work that these students have put in with a little recognition, and perhaps, some money to help with their future plans.

There were a number of touching moments during the presentation, but none more than when the Bryce Rinehart Scholarship was presented to Trenton Freeman. Upon mention of Bryce’s name, members of the deceased student’s class began to rise in applause, followed shortly by the whole auditorium.

“I think Bryce heard you,” said Flora Academic Foundation President Bill Atwood after the thunderous applause had subsided.

Morning Jolt: Giant pasta box on sale

Pasta maker Barilla is making Guinness World Record boxes of pasta for people in Turkey. The giant pasta boxes will be almost 5 feet tall and weigh half a metric ton. If someone buys one of these boxes – for $560 – it will be delivered because of its weight.

Morning Jolt: Angry dentist story a hoax

A story that landed on reputable websites and broadcasts around the country – including CNN, MSNBC and Yahoo News – was deemed a hoax after a reporter looked into the story. The tale was that a dentist pulled all the teeth out of her ex-boyfriend’s mouth after he cheated on her. The reporter couldn’t verify any of the information, however, and it was ruled a hoax.
