The Canton High freshman girls basketball team remained unbeaten in Mid-Illini Conference play with a 39-21 victory over Metamora on Saturday.


Canton (8-1, 6-0 Mid-Illini) led 13-3 after the opening period as Ellie Downing scored nine points. CHS added 12 points in the second quarter on the way to enjoying a 25-10 halftime lead.


The Lady Giants managed just two point in the third frame, but the defense held Metamora to six points, allowing the visitors to maintain a 27-16 advantage heading into the final quarter.


Canton scored 12 points in the final minutes, including five by Ashlyn Zedric, allowing it to maintain control.


Downing and Zedric finished in double figures for CHS with 13 and 11 points respectively. Addie Palmer added five points, followed by Katie Smith with four. Bree Williamson, Ashley Groves and Ella Wheeler chipped in two points each. Mady Passmore and Lyndsey Conway also played, but did not score for the Lady Giants.


Brooklyn Marshall topped Metamora with eight points.


The Canton High freshmen return to action today as they host Washington in a Mid-Illini Conference game at the CHS South Gym starting at 6 p.m.
