At Floyd Henson Junior High School, Flora and Xenia eighth graders walked across the stage at a promotional exercise held Monday evening in the school’s gym. On one side, their lives as elementary school students, on the other, a new school and going back to being the smallest fish in the pond.

“We’ve all had our ups and downs as a class,” said Maverick Fisher during the ceremony’s welcome, likening junior high to a football game and the faculty’s influence as a motivating halftime speech, “We are very thankful for those speeches we’ve received along the way.”

The ceremony saw 84 students promoted to high school.

Opening the event was Morgan Van Hyning, who recited the Pledge of Allegiance and gave an invocation.

DARE Day at Floyd Henson

Sixth grade students at Floyd Henson Junior High School who have been working all through their second semester on their DARE class got a bit of reward this Friday as the school held their annual DARE Day, when students get to play games, eat and drink and see some cool law enforcement demonstrations.

DARE Day started off with the students getting their DARE T-shirts, which are provided free to the program by the Flora Odd Fellows. Then, the action went to the playground, where they played games and had some lunch before the first demonstrations in the early afternoon.

Students got to meet a furry cop next. It wasn't Mark Flack of the Illinois State Police, but rather, his partner, Rohdee, who was likely to shed. Flack is a K9 officer and Rohdee is a Belgian Malinois, a dog similar in appearance to a German Shepherd.
