Walking down the hallways of Clay City High School, a delicious aroma pervades the air. Teachers and students don’t have to ask where the smell is coming from. They know that down the hallway, the Foods & Nutrition classes are hard at work.
The CCHS Foods & Nutrition classes are putting their newly remodeled kitchen to good use preparing a variety of food. Cooking categories the groups have practiced include: baking, yeast breads, and stir-frying. Cuisines including chocolate chip cookies, crescent rolls, garlic chicken stir-fry, and shrimp fried rice have been dubbed favorites by the classes.
The students can presently look forward to perform techniques such as broiling, cake decorating, and possibly pasta-making. For the upcoming broiling segment, 3rd hour Foods II is specifically interested in cooking shish kebabs.
When asked why they enjoyed the class, Melinda Seman, ’10, answered, “It’s extremely fun and interesting, and we’ve already learned a lot about making food.” Megan Kessler, ’12, replied, “Foods educates us on how to prepare delicious dishes that we wouldn’t otherwise think of attempting.” Brett Evans, ’12, said, “This class gives us important homemaking skills that we’ll need for the future.” When Katelyn Hosselton, ’11, was asked she answered, “Foods is an important class because not only do we learn about how to prepare food, but it also teaches us the value of family meals. This is vital because few families have time to sit down and eat together. It’s nice for us to be able to share a meal with our whole group, and knowing that we made what we’re eating makes it taste even better.”
