Clay County Hospital Clinic had a proud introduction this Friday of its OB/Gyn specialty clinic, headed by Dr. Doug Combs, M.D.

Combs and the specialty clinic come to CCH through a unique partnership between Clay County Hospital, which is managed by BJC Healthcare, and St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospitals.

“We’re glad that they’re here,” said Clay County Hospital President Bob Sellers. “This is a great opportunity for Clay County being in a partnership with folks from Mt. Vernon.”

Combs has been a doctor for 15 years. Immediately before coming on here, he practiced in Breese.

When asked what his favorite part his field was, Combs answered, “The variety. We get to do a lot of different things from delivering babies to surgery, and then we get to follow people over years to get to know them well.”

“But please don’t make them believe that we are delivering babies here,” Sellers quickly added.

“The intent would be for the ladies to get most of their prenatal care here and then deliver in Mt. Vernon,” said Combs.

The range of services offered by Combs and the other doctors from SMGS speaks to the variety Combs mentioned. Those services include wellness checkups, family planning, pregnancy care, incontinence treatment, infertility services, evaluation and treatment of abnormal paps, perimenopause and menopause management, mammograms, bone density testing and ultrasounds.

SMGS/CCH Clinic patients also have access to DaVinci Robotic Surgery, a minimally invasive laparoscopic method of performing surgical procedures like hysterectomies.

When asked why an expecting mother in the area should consider the CCH Clinic for their prenatal care, Sellers said, “Because it’s the same prenatal care that you’ll get anywhere else and its closer to home and everything stays here.”

“Now, the delivery on the other hand, will go some place else, but they would have to go some place else any way.”

Sellers says that CCH got out of the delivery business a long time ago due to skyrocketing malpractice insurance prices in the State of Illinois.

The other Doctors who will be working with Combs include Mick Covlin, M.D.,; Michael Schifano, D.O.; Lisa Nolen, M.D.; and Debra Carson, M.D. Combs also mentioned that there may be future plans to bring in a mid-level care provider, like a Nurse Practitioner or a Midwife.

For more information on the specialty clinic or to schedule an appointment, please call (877) 456-2496. Be sure to specify Flora when asked what site for an appointment. Currently, the clinic, which is open during business hours Fridays, is also taking walk-ins.
