It was announced early Tuesday that Frontier Community College’s Learning Resource Center has received a grant totaling $26,000 from Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White to enhance broadband computer access.
FCC’s Learning Resource Center is one of forty-one Illinois public libraries and community college learning resource centers sharing in a nearly $1 million “Eliminate the Digital Divide Program Grant” awarded to the Illinois State Library by the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO).
Merna Youngblood, FCC Learning Resource Center Director, says the funds will be used to provide equipment, training and services for broadband- delivered education, employment and reading services to the unemployed, seniors, minorities, persons with disabilities and others.
“The digital divide prevents many low-income citizens from having access to important technology and educational programs that can greatly enrich their lives,” said Secretary White. “Having access to information allows citizens to engage in lifelong learning, and these grants will allow Frontier Community College Learning Resource Center and other grant recipients to bridge the digital divide and offer critical services that will hopefully allow more Illinoisans to lead better, more productive lives.”
Youngblood is excited to be awarded this grant because of the benefits to those in this and surrounding communities. “We are excited about the possibilities of bringing computer access to outlying locations through a variety of workshops.,” stated Youngblood. “Our plans are to offer workshops in Fairfield as well as Albion, Cisne, Flora, Grayville, Lawrenceville, Newton and other locations. A variety of workshops will be offered pertaining to information on GED, and job related web sites. Other websites include legal aid and National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. Workshops on basic computer skills, resume writing and interview skills, research and writing will also be offered.”
