Brenda Britton is going to have a long day Tuesday.
Well before the sun rises she will be up and working making sure that things are running smoothly throughout the each of the county’s 22 precincts. As Clay County Clerk, Britton, will be running Tuesday’s election.
Judges will be to the polling places by about 5 a.m. to make sure that everything is ready for the 6 p.m. poll opening.
The polls will be open across Illinois until 7 p.m.
The primary, which will cost the county somewhere around $20,000, including Britton and her staff of five at the courthouse in Louisville as well as 110 election judges, five for each precinct in the county.
Britton said that Clay County has wonderful election judges and they are quick to get results back to the courthouse.
“We have a great group of people who are our judges,” Britton said.
While the people are great, the weather has been anything but for Britton since she took office. During a primary a couple of years ago snow caused a power outage in the northwest part of the county. And in 2008 a tornado damaged the polling place near Ingraham.
Besides the people involved, there are 166 different ballot styles that will be used across the county during the primary. There are some many styles because of different areas of the county being in different districts, voting laws requiring that people who have moved to still be able to vote in federal elections, the new Green party ballot and nonpartisan ballots for those who wish to vote on the road tax question, but not in the partisan primaries.
There are no contested races in Clay County Tuesday, but several races will be contested on the state and federal level.
There are a myriad of people running up and down the ballot for state-wide offices, including governor.
Tuesday election will set the stage for the Nov. 4 General Election which will see the state elect a new Senator and see all of the state’s constitutional offices up for grabs. Also all of the congressional seats in the state will be up for grabs as well as all of the representative seats in the Illinois House. Half of the Illinois Senate seats will be up for election.
