Dancey Field was packed on Saturday afternoon as the Flora Faithful rallied behind the Wolves as they played Mowequa (Central A&M) in the first round of the IHSA Class 2A playoffs. The Raiders rushing attack proved to be too much as they handed the Wolves a 19-7 defeat.

The Midland Trail Conference Tournament was played last Thursday and Friday. 
The schools that competed in the tournament and their seatings in the tournament were South Central (1), Grayville (2), Clay City (3), Louisville (4), Cisne (5), West Richland (6), Wayne City (7), Woodlawn (8), Odin (9), Sandoval (10), and Webber (11).

On Thursday, the first night of the tournament, Clay City played at home against Sandoval, Odin, and Louisville. 

Serve, Set, Spike.  These terms are very familiar to the FHS Volleyball seniors who will be recognized Tuesday night at their last home volleyball game.  

Senior players being honored are Katherine Deaton, Hannah Knapp, Kendal McGrew, Jessie Scara and Melanie Shehorn.

As with the volley, some sports have had their individual senior nights.  Friday October 23, at the Edwards County home football game, will be the time to recognize all fall sports seniors: football, volleyball, tennis, golf, cheerleading and band.

Students this Friday have an early dismissal at 2 p.m. which helps soften the blow of grades going home.  Ready or not, first quarter is over.

The Flora Wolves defeated the Palestine Pioneers for their sixth win of the season and in the process, made history.

Friday night marked the first time in Flora High School history Wolves football has made the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) state playoffs for a three consecutive seasons.

The Wolves made the playoffs for the first time in 1989 as a class 4A school under then coach Jerry Stringer. Stringer came into the game with a 6-3 record and faced Carbondale. Flora fell 28-6 in their first ever playoff game.

The Flora Wolfgals went back to work on Saturday after getting defeated by an always tough Edwards County Lady Lions team on Thurdsday.

Flora traveled to Benton on Saturday to play in the Benton Tournament and their first match opponent was Pinkneyville.

The Flora Wolves came into their week three Little Illini Conference (LIC) game against the Casey-Westfield Warriors with high expectations.

Unfortunately for the Wolves, those expectations were crushed by the Warriors Friday night when they were defeated 35-6 by the reigning LIC champs.

Flora Post 14 made history this past weekend when they were crowned the 5th Division Junior American Legion Baseball Champions.
Post 14 hosted the tournament at Mike Jennings Field in Flora and opened their weekend play with Carlyle.

The Flora summer recreation program has turned America’s pastime into a great opportunity for young players.

Flora’s first annual baseball camp was held this week at the baseball fields at the south edge of town.

Campers were informed on the proper fundamentals and techniques of baseall.

The Flora Jr. Legion played their first game in a week-and-a-half on Tuesday when they traveled to Carlyle.

After shaking the rust off  from the long break, the Post 14 squad scored 8 runs in the fourth inning and six runs in the fifth inning to put the game away and come away victorious with a 16-3 win.

The summer heat is starting to take effect and the race for the National League Central Division crown is just as hot.

The National League (NL) Central is the only division in baseball where all six team are within five games of each other.

Currently, as of Sunday, the Milwaukee Brewers (40-35) and St. Louis Cardinals (41-36) were tied for the division lead.

A game that has lasted for generations and produced some of the greatest athletes in the world is being taught right here at home.

Since the beginning of June, young tennis players have gathered at Kayo Powless Tennis Courts every Monday and Tuesday morning to learn the proper game from long time Flora High School tennis coach Jerry Stringer and tennis enthusiast Dave Billingsley.

The Summer heat is officially here and the youngsters around Clay County are taking full advantage of this summer’s coolest attraction.

The Flora Swimming Pool is crowded on a daily basis with temperatures reaching the mid-80s  by the early morning hours.

Brax Chaney Field was the place to be this weekend as the Flora Boys Baseball program put on the 12 and under  Wooden Bat Classic.

It was a good start as Flora went 3-0 in pool play and advanced to the championship round Sunday.

Sunday they defeated Mattoon in a semi-final game, before falling in the championship game of the tournament to Salem.
