It hasn't been the best season for the North Clay Cardinals, especially through the middle of the season.
But they put together enough wins to claim their final Midland Trail Conference and then ran off five straight win through the MTC Tournament and postseason.
The Cardinals got to the sectional championship with a 9-5 win over Oblong on Thursday on the strength of a six run sixth inning.
It was another big inning Saturday that propelled the Cards to the first ever sectional championship in the school's history.
The Cards scored single runs in the second and fourth innings before putting five runs on the board in the top of the seventh inning.
Collin Warren held the Lions scoreless over the seven innings while allowing five hits and striking out nine.
Michael Lovett was 3-5 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Jerick VanDyke was 2-4 including a two run ground rule double in the seventh inning.
The Cardinals will now play Goreville Monday at the SIU Supersectional beginning at 3:00 p.m.
