The 2009-2010 boy's basketball season will go on at least another day for North Clay senior Colton Bailey. And if the 5-foot-9 point guard has his way, it may go on another week or two.
On Wednesday, at Red Hill High School, Bailey, taking part in the Class 1A Three-Point Showdown, sponsored by Country Financial, knocked down 10-of-15 shots from beyond the three-point arch to tie for first place and advance to Friday's final round of the competition at the Sectional level.
The competitors have 45 seconds to shoot 15 balls, set up on racks of five, at three different locations around the three-point arch, with the most accurate shooters moving on.
If Bailey finishes in the top four on Friday, he will head north to Carver Arena, in Peoria, on Thursday, March 11. If he advances out of that round, he will compete for the top spot among all Class 1A school entrants on Friday, March 12, also at Carver Arena.
Bailey began the three-point shooting competition at the Class 1A South Central Regional, in Farina last week.
In the final round of that competition, Bailey advanced via a 9-of-15 effort on Friday before the Regional championship game. Bailey, finished runner-up to Gabe Owens of Woodlawn, who hit 10-of-15.
Friday's winners will then return to Carver Area, on Saturday, March 20 to compete with three-point shooters from all four classes, 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A for the title of Three-Point Showdown King of the Hill.
