After the Flora Wolfgals captured the IHSA Class 2A Regional title last Saturday in Mt. Carmel, they turned their sights on the next trophy in line, the Newton Sectional crown.
The Wolfgals were matched up against the Teutopolis Lady Shoes.
Teutopolis advanced to the Newton Sectional by defeating Effingham (St. Anthony) 3-2.
Last Wednesday the two schools collided for a hard fought battle that saw great pitching and timely hitting from both squads.
Flora Wolfgals Coach Greg Schafer sent his ace to the bump, Senior Jordyn Wells.
Wells pitched a strong game for the Wolfgals going seven strong, allowing just two runs while striking out five and didn’t walk a single hitter.
Both runs Wells allowed were unearned.
Flora found themselves trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Wolfgals had runners on second and third with two outs when a passed ball allowed Mallori Dillon to score from third to cut the Wolfgals deficit to one.
Coach Greg Schafer then gambled and as the Teutopolis pitcher walked back to the mound sent pinch-runner Jessica Scara home to try and score.
Teutopolis reactly quickly and tagged Scara out at the plate to end the inning and the Wolfgals season, defeated by Teutopolis 2-1.
The Lady Shoes went on to beat Casey-Westfield 5-1 on Saturday to win the Newton Sectional Championship and continued post-season play Monday against Stanford (Olympia) at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
