Mt. Carmel, Ill. -

The Flora Wolfgals were the number one seed in the Mt. Carmel regional and did what champions do on Saturday when they captured the Regional title after beating Fairfield 2-1.

Flora’s post-season began last Tuesday when they faed the host Lady Aces.

Mt. Carmel defeated Lawrenceville in a quarter-final game and gave the Wolfgals everything they had.

Coach Greg Schafer sent Senior Jordyn Wells to the hill for the Regional semi-final.

Wells responded with an oustanding seven inning shut-out performance of Mt. Carmel.

She struck out eleven, walked one batter, and allowed three hits in the victory.

Mt. Carmel matched Wells performance for five innings as they kept the Wolfgals off the scoreboard.

It was in the bottom of the sixth inning when Flora finally was able to break through.

Chauncey Leonard led off the inning with a strike out and fellow Senior Mallori Dillon popped out to second.

The inning looked to be bleak before Hillary Johnson drew a walk and scored when Kendal McGrew blasted a RBI double into left-centerfield to give the Wolfgals the 1-0 lead.

Kendal Golden left McGrew stranded at second when she struck out to end the inning.

Wells made quick work of the Lady Aces in the top of the seventh inning by retiring Mt. Carmel in order.

The 1-0 win advanced Flora into a Regional Championship game against the winner of Olney and Fairfield.

Fairfield defeated Olney 4-3, setting up an a clash between to former North Egypt Conference schools.

The Wolfgals fate was on the strong arm of Wells once again as she took to the hill to try and capture the Regional crown.

Flora and Wells were the home team and sat the Lady Mules down in order in the top of the first on three fly ball outs.

Fairfield’s starting pitcher, Janna Wright, was just as effective on Saturday.

Wright gave up a lead off double to Dillon to start the bottom of the first inning, then retired Johnson, McGrew, and Golden on strikes to get her way out of an early jam.

Wells continued to pitch strong for the Wolfgals as she retired Fairfield in order for the second straight inning.

Lexi Greenwood led off the bottom of the second inning for Flora and reached on a Fairfield error.

Greenwood would try and steal second, but was thrown out.

A double into the left-centerfield gap by Freshman Marlee Sulsberger gave Flora a runner in scoring position with one out.

Shilo Trowbridge followed with a single to left and the Wolfgals had runners at the corners.

Freshman Lauren Putbrese hit a duck snort over the Lady Mules first baseman’s head and drove home a pair of runs to give the Wolfgals the 2-0 lead.

Leonard followed with a deep fly out to left field and on the ensuing play Putbrese, who was trying to tag from second, was thrown at third base to end the inning.

Wells allowed her first hit of the game in the top of the third, but continued to dominate the Lady Mules through the first six innings of the game.

Wright was just as impressive as she kept her team in the game, by shutting down the Wolfgals attack through six innings, allowing just the two second inning runs.

The top of the seventh inning got tricky for Wells and the Wolfgals.

A lead off single and then a walk gave Fairfield runners on first and second with no one out.

The Lady Mules put on a sacrifice bunt and moved both runners into scoring position.

Fairfield plated their first run with a one out single to left field and cut the Wolfgals lead down to one.

Wells then found her spot, dug deep and struck out the next hitter and induced a pop out to Wolfgals catcher Sulsberger to end the game and give the Wolfgals an IHSA Regional Championship with a 2-1 win.

Flora plays today, Wednesday, in Newton against Teutopolis at 4:30 p.m.
