What is a stroke? A stroke is what happens when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted or lessened. The lack of a normal flow of blood to the brain deprives the brain of oxygen and nutrients. Brain cells will begin to die off in mere minutes.
Thanks to advances in medicine, however, many strokes can be prevented or treated. The Mayo Clinic states that fewer Americans die due to stroke now than 15 years ago.
Stroke symptoms. Since early action is the key to a good outcome after a stroke, knowing the warning signs of a stroke is critical. There are several symptoms to keep in mind. It is important to know the precisely the time symptoms began. Also knowing how long ago the stroke occurred will guide medical professionals in the proper care and treatment of the stroke.
    Stroke signs include:
Walking difficulty — Suddenly becoming clumsy in walking and coordination or loss of balance and dizziness are stroke symptoms.
Vision problems — If vision problems in one or both eyes suddenly crops up or you experience blurry, double or darkened vision, you might be experiencing a stroke warning sign.
Problems speaking and understanding — If you experience confusion, slurring of words or trouble finding the words to speak, this may be the signal of a stroke.
Severe headache — The sudden onset of an unexplained headache with or without dizziness, nausea or vomiting could indicate a stroke is occurring.
Blacking out — Losing consciousness is a stroke symptom.
When to seek emergency medical care. If you think any or all of the above symptoms are happening to you or someone else, seek immediate emergency medical care. Time is of the essence in stroke treatment.
